I don’t write a lot of reviews, especially negative ones, but this book is just too much. I have the utmost respect for the Navy SEALs, God bless them, and I’m all for anyone using their past experiences to start a business, sell a book, and make a buck. More power to them. The information in this book, however, smells like someone cashing in on a gullible public. I guess this counts me with the gullible since I purchased it. I wasn’t under any delusion that real SEAL and covert trade secrets we..more
These might be real skills, but it's pure entertainment for basic folks like me who want to pretend they will ever have the day in a life of a 'violent nomad'. This kind of non-fiction is better than any spy novel or video game because it lets you imagine for a few hours that you may actually need to survive in hostile territory or engage in covert activity. Reminds me of the children's Spy Handbook that I was obsessed with at the age of 9. Very fun.

This book is mainly about skills needed for covert operations in a hostile territory. Most of the skills mentioned in the book rely on improvisation than anything else. I was surprised to know that operatives work with a minimum dependence on high-tech gadgets and rather rely mainly on improvisation to carry out their missions. This went contrary to my belief gathered from watching James Bond movies. I was impressed by the writing style when I first skimmed through this book and wanted to probe f..more

This book just stupid. It's more like 100 skills Jason Bourne could use in movies. For example, 'every hotel room has a bible or Quran in a bedside drawer and a couple of these taped together yields an improvised body armor that provides significant protection from projectiles.' Seriously. What am I supposed to break into the room next to me to steal an extra bible and run out and buy tape? As an average size man, I used the bible in my room just now and based on it I would need 4 just to cover..more

Despite its title, retired Navy SEAL Clint Emerson's '100 Deadly Skills: The SEAL Operative's Guide to Eluding Pursuers, Evading Capture, and Surviving Any Dangerous Situations', is as often applicable to civilian life as to clandestine operations. Tips include skills on avoiding such annoyances as car thefts, carjackings, home invasions and burglaries. Hint: never leave your keys in your car. We all know this, but when the advice comes from somebody who can also tell you how to steal a car, may..more

Tremendous fun! As a writer - and a fan of the TV show, 'Archer' - this manual got my creative juices flowing. (Uh..phrasing?) I find myself wanting to write an action scene involving a Zebra pen, a newspaper nail bat, improvised body armour.. But seriously, there are lots of fascinating tidbits in here, e.g. lock-picking, escaping from restraints, and digital work-arounds such as how to send anonymous emails.
Oh wow, what a book. This book is some crazy shit. Its cool to take a look at, for the ridiculous and whacky shit (with illustrations) that qualify as 'skills', such as: -A very limited guide of how to hijack a Cessna (with no idea how to take off, fly, or land, assuming you either know how to do at least half of those skills and can parachute). -Traveling across wastelands and covering your tracks/supplies by air, land, or sea, because you're going to be doing A LOT of at your desk job -Turning a..more

Interesting tips. Some very useful, some you'll never use. At least you hope you don't have to. Unless you find yourself in hostile enemy territory of course.
disclaimer: When I say 'picked this book up', I mean 'requested from netgalley'. I picked this book up for several reasons. Those who know my reviews won't be surprised to find I picked it up for the cover. But AFTER I looked at the cover, I thought it would be a cool book and I might find some things to try with my husband. I then thought further and hoped this would lead to practical application for women travelling alone, or adult women who have to travel at night, as my case sometimes is. What..more
Before anybody gets the wrong idea, let me be clear. I'm not a 'prepper', not planning to join the French Foreign Legion, not making arrangements for the collapse of American society and not intent on participating in any conflict. I wanted to read this book for two reasons: 1. I like to write thrillers. While I might not have do the things in this book, my characters will. 2. I travel for work. A lot. There are many chapters in the book which can make me more safe. The book itself is surprisingly w..more
It was okay book. I don't know if 100 Deadly Skills it really the right title for it, but there was a lot of useful information in it. The illustrations really helped and were well drawn. Some of the instructions I wish were a little more detailed. Over all the book really wants to teach you how to think outside the box and adapt to different situations. How to get out of or avoid bad ones. Am I glad I read it? Yeah. Is it worth having around? I think so. Would I recommend it to others? Mmmm, I..more

This book I believe as an essential for any person in this day and age. Many of the skills and knowledge of this book have already helped me a great deal. You learn so much in this book and is absolutely worth the buy because the knowledge I've learned I will say this book is worth its weight in Gold. Some things in the book I found quite boring and unneeded for a civilian. Some knowledge I also found a little unnerving for anyone to read that may not be a law-abiding citizen could use for many..more
One word that I could describe this book as is secretive. Everything in this book is done secretly, whether the person is sneaking into a building, or picking a lock, or concealing a secret weapon as simple as a newspaper. This book changed the way I think about this certain topic. I learned that even if you are a regular civilian, with the right tools and mindset, you can act and think just like an operative on a mission. This book was fairly simple to read and understand, there were no words t..more

Fast read. I read it in one night. There are a lot of pictures, and it's a lot of fun. Interesting. But if you're not an operator, or not being actively put into situations where you get chased all the time, a lot of the information is just fun, not useful. For instance, will any (or at least many) of us ever really need to know how to get rid of a body? Or steal an airplane? I mean, sure, that's cool to know, but I picture that bit of information taking up space in my brain that I could fill wi..more
While I doubt I will ever have to use any of these skills, it was fascinating to read about them. This book reminded me of alot of different action movies, constantly making me picture myself in these scenarios. The pictures in the book were great and it was understandable. Also, each diagram was efficiently done in a page of graphics (Not counting the text for the chapter). I usually enjoy these types of books with life hacks, survival, and in this case, deadly skills for surviving situations...more

Talk about phoning it in. I learned that before I am abducted and thrown into the trunk of a car, I should familiarize myself with car trunks and determine my options if I'm ever trapped in one. No insight on how trunk latches work - just go figure it out. The rest of the book is filled with tactics that were poorly described and hard to visualize. I learned more from paying attention to Matt Damon's moves in the Jason Bourne movies. Oh.. I DID learn quite a bit about the different ways to hide o..more

Audiobook. Interesting info that you could probably look for on the net (if you thought of them..) but handy to have in one place. Some good tidbits but a few of the skills described were not fully explained.. I had to look on the net for a full explanation (for example; bracing for impact) maybe there were diagrams in the book? Still worth the read/listen as you pick up skills that will help you think differently (e.g. blend in and look for potential hazards) and aid you in unfamiliar and unfore..more
Excellent and extremely well formatted book on a great collection of “MacGyver-isms” cool tradecraft and low-tech improvisations for the “Violent Nomad” or the singleton deep cover special operator. Emerson is the Naval Special Warfare community go-to guy for situational awareness and singleton survival skills (as well as other rarified elements of the special operations community) this book is not only incredibly educational but just fun to read — and practice.

I finished reading another book today. It's called 100 Deadly Skills and was written by an ex navy seal named Clint Emerson. The book contains information and diagrams about the various skills that operatives use in the field which can be useful for civilians also. These include skills such as lockpicking, escape and evasion tactics and my personal favorite.. how to dispose of dead bodies. :) Overall it was an interesting read. You can find it on Google Play Books.
I enjoy learning skills and information to better protect myself during this day and age. I would say about 25 percent of the things in this book pertained to everyday USA member of society and another 25 percent did not seem accurate at all. Over all it was an enjoyable read and learned alot of useful things to use in my everyday life.

I would say the first 3/4s of the book was a little boring. Mainly tips and tricks I will never use. But the last 1/4 of the book was very useful! Like, how to escape from being tied up, how to disarm someone trying to attack you, how to win a knife fight, etc etc. I'm a little disappointed the whole book couldn't be geared towards the layman as opposed to a secret operative.

This book is an invaluable source for writers. And it has made me aware of a lot of things to be more aware of in daily life and when I travel. However, a few of the hacks described and illustrated are already out of date. for instance, no one uses disposable cameras anymore, anywhere. Cell phones have completely replaced that tech, and so, my chance to make an improvised taser is gone!
A wide gamut of skills in here, from the most everyday and doable to the most outrageous. The best (and most valuable) parts of this book are when it trains the reader in mindset and attitude, which necessarily underlies all of the skills.
Kind of an interesting mix of common-sense approaches and insider-know-how. Illustrations for every deadly skill! Without more practice, I'm less James Bond/Jason Bourne/Rambo (as I'd hoped) for having read this and more like Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies (minus the stripping scene).

Its quite interesting, i will try some of these methods although some of it seems over the top. still it was enjoyable to read have to say.i hope these techniques are actually useful and well.work for me.
There were some interesting bits in here, but I think it's aimed more at US readers as several tips relate to guns. It's entertaining enough though if you just want to pretend you're a 'violent nomad'.
I had a good time with this book. Print is much better than audio version. Read my full review --> http://www.ridingwiththewindowdown.co..
Fun book. Lots of pictures. Much of the info would be impractical for me. Not going to carry around items to make an explosive, for example. Really enjoyed most of it though. Informative and good food for thought and fuel for the imagination.
The book had some really good info. Don't know how much I will ever use. Did enjoy reading it.
