What do you need to know about free software?

My Vaio VGN-FZ290 hard drive crashed. I got a new WD hard drive and a copy of Vista (64 bit). Everything went together great except now I have a few bugs to work out. The big problem that I have is with brightness settings for the screen. The screen is stuck on full bright, which is annoying to say the least. Last night I found a forum where someone else had the same problem that I have. At first I thought that the utility for the function key wasn’t working or missing. But then I realized that the function key is working because the mute button works. With that in mind I started looking for issues with the brightness keys. That’s when I found a post where someone said that their battery wasn’t lasting very long in addition to not being able to change the screen brightness.

The battery life is my second problem. If I’m lucky, I can get 20 minutes out of it where before it would last for an hour or better. My third problem is that when I boot up, I get an error message saying that my battery isn’t connected correctly or that it is the wrong battery. Which I know that it’s neither one of those because it’s the battery that came with the laptop. So with those three things in mind, I found a post where someone said that it was an issue with the chipset. I opened my device manager and sure enough, one of the chips had a yellow triangle next to it saying that it was running a generic controller. I went to Intel’s site to download the driver only to be led to a broken link. Thanks Intel. But when I Googled the chip, I found all kinds of drivers for it. I downloaded one and ran it, but it still didn’t fix it. My next step was to uninstall the driver and reboot. Naturally Windows found the “new” hardware and searched for the driver, but couldn’t find it. I tried directing Windows to where I saved the driver, but it still doesn’t see it. So my next thought is that I need to edit the registry so that it can load the correct driver.
Also, I upgraded from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit. I found out that when I upgrade my RAM to 4 GB’s, you need a 64 bit system to fully utilize the RAM. A 32 bit system will only recognize 3.5GB’s. So I’m wondering if using the 64 bit OS is keeping the driver from being loaded properly.
