What do you need to know about free software?

I upgraded the Gateway GT5404 machine from Vista (OEM) to XP Pro. I was able to find drivers for all components except the SM Bus Controller. (In the Device Manager, it appears with a '!'--so I disabled it.) I have an Intel 945G Viiv motherboard. The bus controller is an Intel Corp 82801G (ICH7).Driver

The system is operational without this drvier, but I experience some intermittant problems with the USB mouse, for instance. I'm not sure what functions are handled by the SM Bus Controller.
Can anyone suggest a solution?
